The liver is a vital organ, meaning that one cannot live without it. The liver serves many critical functions including metabolism of drugs and toxins, removing degradation products of normal body metabolism (for example clearance of ammonia and bilirubin from the blood), and synthesis of many important proteins and enzymes (such as factors necessary for blood to clot).

Blood enters the liver from two channels, the hepatic artery and the portal vein, bringing nutrients and oxygen to liver cells, also known as hepatocytes, and bile ducts. Blood leaves the liver via the hepatic veins which drain into the inferior vena cava which immediately enters the heart. The liver makes bile, a liquid that helps dissolve fat and eliminate metabolic waste and toxins via the intestine. Each hepatocyte creates bile and excretes it into microscopic channels that join to form bile ducts. Like tributaries joining to form a river, the bile ducts join to form a single “hepatic duct” that brings bile into the intestine.

Liver transplantation is a potential treatment for acute or chronic conditions which cause irreversible and severe (“end-stage”) liver dysfunction. Since the procedure carries relatively high risks, is resourceintensive, and requires major life-modifications after surgery, it is reserved for dire circumstances.

What should I avoid eating after my liver transplant?

Water from lakes and rivers.

Unpasteurized milk products.

Raw or undercooked. Eggs. Meats, particularly pork and poultry. Fish and other seafood. '

Precautions: -

First step towards a healthy recovery begins from one’s home. When the patient arrives home after liver transplant, the family members should keep in mind that the house has good ventilation. The patient should wear a mask in the first three months following surgery while going to crowded places. Hand washing after meeting strangers should be practised.

 Diet And Nutrition

After the surgery, the patient will have an insatiable appetite, which is a good sign. The patient’s diet should be rich in protein. Drinking water must be safe. Raw food and salads must be avoided. One should also avoid sweets and fruits that might shoot up the blood sugar. Post-transplant medicines will often raise the blood sugar and insulin will need to be used in the first three months. Smoking and consuming alcohol is a strict no-no.

Medications are essential for the recovery process, and one should never skip their medicines prescribed by the doctors. It is also essential for the family members to get familiarized with the medicines and ensure that the patient complies with the prescribed medication.

Exercise

Regular exercise is also recommended to the patients. However, they should never lift heavyweights, including babies, or perform abdominal exercises such as weight training or swimming before three months. Deep breathing can help in expanding the lungs

Major causes of cirrhosis leading to liver failure and liver transplant include:

• Hepatitis B and C.
• Alcoholic liver disease, which causes damage to the liver due to excessive alcohol consumption.
• Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition in which fat builds up in the liver, causing inflammation or liver cell damage.
• Genetic diseases affecting the liver, including hemochromatosis, which causes excessive iron build up in the liver, and Wilson’s disease, which causes excessive copper build up in the liver.
• Diseases that affect the bile ducts (the tubes that carry bile away from the liver). Biliary atresia is the most common reason for liver transplant among children.
